ABOUT

Terry resides in Park Orchards, an outer suburb of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia.

Having painted from early in his life, he developed a passion for natural objects and proceeded to hone his skills in observation and painting techniques.

While gaining some early training in graphic art, it was not until 1980, in undertaking a course in Japanese brush painting (Sumie) that the delights of detail inherent in flowers, insects and birds took his artistic endeavours on a new journey.

Since then, he has concentrated mainly on watercolour technique and botanical studies. This led to a number of one-man exhibitions and numerous joint exhibitions.

Terry Napier Celia Rosser Medal

Terry has participated in 'The Art of Botanical Illustration' at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne, since it's beginning.  His paintings are represented in Victoria's State Botanical Collection, The Cranbourne Botanical Collection, The Illustrated Garden (The 21st Florilegium of the Friends of the RBG) and in the Government House Florilegium, held by the State Library of Victoria.

Retiring from RMIT in 1996, he now concentrates on painting and teaching in the 'Nature is Art' programs he started in 1996. In 2016, the ‘Nature in Art’ program continues, and has approximately 80 students over 8 classes.

In 2010 Terry was awarded the 'Celia Rosser' medal for his continued commitment to botanical art and teaching.
